CHINA FOREIGN AFFAIRS UNIVERSITY

Since its founding in 1955, China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) has been dedicated to grooming China’s most promising young minds with global vision and great learning to work for China’s foreign services and for world peace and prosperity. Directly affiliated with China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and co-built by the Ministry of Education, CFAU offers a unique educational experience that prides itself in intellectual integrity and academic excellence.

CFAU adheres to the philosophy that CFAU education should pride itself in diplomatic and international studies with high-level proficiency in foreign languages. CFAU trains its students with “true patriotism and global vision; professional expertise and great proficiency in foreign languages; and high quality and interdisciplinary knowledge”.

CFAU has a 2,000 student population composed of Ph.D., MA, BA, double-degree students and more than 150 international students. The University has eight departments and one specialized institute focusing on education & research, including Department of Diplomacy & Foreign Affairs Administration, Department of English & International Studies, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of International Law, Department of Basic Education, Department of Graduate Studies, School of International Economics, School of International Education, and Institute of International Relations. Additionally, CFAU has more than twenty research institutes and centers, including the Institute of Asian Studies, the Institute of International Law, and the Chinese Foreign Policy Studies Center. Students are able to specialize in subjects such as diplomatic studies, English, Translation & Interpreting, French, Japanese, Spanish, International Law, International Economics & Trade, Finance, International Relations and World Politics, etc.

FUDAN UNIVERSITY

Fudan University was established in 1905 as Fudan Public School. It was the first institution of higher education to be founded by a Chinese person, renowned modern educator Ma Xiangbo. The school’s name was chosen from the “Biography of Yuxia” in the Classic of History (《尚书大传 虞夏传》), where the two characters fù复 (“return”) and dàn旦 (“dawn”) are found in the famous lines “Brilliant are the sunshine and moonlight, again the morning glory after the night,” signifying continuous self-renewal, and expressing the hope that China could become a country with a strong higher education system run by Chinese intellectuals. In 1917 the name was changed from Fudan Public School to Fudan Private School; in 1937 after the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, the school moved to Beipei in Chongqing, and in 1941 it became state-run; in 1946 it moved back to its original location in Jiangwan, Shanghai. After the nationwide restructuring of institutions of higher education in 1952, Fudan University became a comprehensive university of arts and sciences; in 1959 it became one of the first National Key Universities along with Shanghai First Medical College (later known as Shanghai Medical University).

Shanghai Medical University was founded in 1927. It was the first medical school to be founded by a Chinese person. It was originally named Fourth Sun Yat-sen University Medical College.

Fudan University was merged with Shanghai Medical University in 2000, forming a new, stronger Fudan University with a broader set of disciplines: medicine, sciences, and arts. As one of the first participants in the 211 and 985 Projects, Fudan has developed into a comprehensive research university, with Departments of Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Medicine, and Management.

Fudan is home to 14,100 undergraduates and associate degree candidates, 14,800 graduates including 3000 foreign degree candidates, 2,700 staff and 3,100 full-time teaching faculty members. Fudan hosts 46 members of Chinese Academy of Science and members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, 99 Chair Professors of Chang Jiang Scholars Program, and 30 National Key Basic Research Program of China (also named “973 Program”) PIs. There are 28 schools and independent departments with 70 bachelor degree programs, 35 doctoral degree programs of Level I academic disciplines, 154 doctoral degree programs, 224 master degree programs, and 29 post-doctoral programs. There are 11 Level I national key academic disciplines and 19 Level II national key academic disciplines. Fudan hosts around 300 research institutes including 5 national key labs, 38 ministerial or provincial key labs and engineering centers, 5 “Project 985” Science and Technology Innovation Platforms and 7 “Project 985” Arts and Social Sciences Innovation Bases.

The campus is laid out as a main area consisting of the Handan Street Campus and Jiangwan New Campus areas, along with two side campuses, Fenglin Campus and Zhangjiang Campus, covering a total area of 2.4432 square kilometers. The total area of all school buildings is 1.4923 square kilometers. Eleven hospitals are also affiliated with the school, including Zhongshan Hospital and Huashan Hospital, with a total of 15,000 doctors, nurses, and personnel.

Fudan University celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2005. Chinese president Hu Jintao sent a letter of congratulations, expressing his hopes that the school will continue its tradition of excellence while developing and innovating into the future, building itself into a world-class comprehensive university, fostering development of persons of talent, ability, and integrity, and putting forth a new, even greater contribution towards building a prosperous society and realizing the Chinese people’s great revival.

Over the past hundred years, the school has made outstanding contributions to the country by developing talent, innovating in science and technology, carrying forward civilization, and serving society. SOOCHOW UNIVERSITY / SUZHOU UNIVERSITY

Situated in the historical and picturesque city of Suzhou, a metropolis well reputed in the world for its classic gardens, Soochow University is a national key institute listed in the Project 211, a first-class member in the "2011 Program" and a top comprehensive university in Jiangsu Province. Under the same school name, the predecessor of Soochow University was founded in the year 1900 as the first Chinese university that had a modern disciplinary system, alaw major (Anglo-American Laws) andan academic journal, and also as the first university that offered postgraduate education for master degrees. Throughout the Century, the University has made significant contributions to the development of the country and society by cultivating over 400,000 experts and talents in various fields. Generations of students and teachers of the university have lived up to the school motto of "Unto a Full Grown Man", and devoted to nurturing model citizens with free spirit, excellence, independence and social responsibility.

ZHEJIANG UNIVERSITY

Located in the historical and picturesque city of Hangzhou, Zhejiang University is a prestigious institution of higher education with a long history. Qiushi Academy, the predecessor of Zhejiang University, was founded in 1897 and was one of the earliest modern academies of higher learning established in China.

Zhejiang University has long been holding the educational philosophy of putting people foremost, cultivating all-round competence in students, seeking the truth and pioneering new trails in search of excellence, and is committed to developing future leaders with an international perspective. Zhejiang University has turned out a large number of outstanding talents in its history. There are more than 200 alumni elected members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering. With educational thoughts advancing with the times, Zhejiang University paces the whole nation in educational reforms. Rich campus culture, advanced teaching facilities and a wide range of international exchanges create favorable conditions for students’ development.

Zhejiang University focuses on assiduous study and research, and science and technological innovation. TIANJIN UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University is the oldest institute of higher education in China, and pioneered the development of modern Chinese education.

COLLEGE OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND CULTURES OF SICHUAN UNIVERSITY

The College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Sichuan University was born from two mergers. First, Sichuan University’s famous century-old Department of Foreign Languages and Literature (founded in 1896) was merged with the Foreign Language Department of the former Chengdu University of Science and Technology (CUST). Shortly thereafter, the new combined department was merged with the Foreign Language Department of the West China University of Medical Sciences (WCUMS).
The College consists of five teaching divisions: the departments of (1) English, (2) Japanese, (3) Russian, (4) French and German, and (5) Foreign Languages for Non-language Majors.

The College has hosted frequent academic exchanges with renowned international universities and research institutions, including those in Hong Kong and Taiwan. Each year, celebrated experts and professors come from America, Britain, Canada, Australia, Russia, Japan, France, Germany and Korea to teach or give lectures to students and faculty. The Japanese Department and French and German Department have developed student exchange programs with renowned Japanese and French universities.
The teachers of the College have received financial support from a number of overseas organizations and institutions. As a result, many of its members have had the chance to lecture, visit, or pursue advanced study abroad.
The College has also been approved by the State’s Ministry of Education (MOE) to have cooperative education with the French government. The specialization of English language and literature of the College is a provincial key discipline.

INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGY AND GEOPHYSICS, CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Overview
The Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IGGCAS) was formed in June 1999, through the integration of the Institute of Geology, CAS and the Institute of Geophysics, CAS. In 2004, the Ionosphere Research Room of the Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Chinese Academy of Sciences was also integrated into the IGGCAS. Since this integration, IGGCAS has become one of the most important and well known geoscience research institutions in China.

IGGCAS is strategically positioned to "establish a brand new international research center with the qualities of "theoretical innovation, technical development, achievement transformation and sci-education integration”, aiming at global technology front, national vital demands, national economic fields, and the main direction of solid Earth sciences. Original breakthroughs have been made in research on global Earth sciences to develop the theory of Earth sciences. IGGCAS’s focuses are major scientific issues in the fields of national resources, energy and environment, so as to support national strategic needs and serve economic and social development. In recent years, IGGCAS has been committed to the transformation of research concepts, organization structure, management model and innovation systems. From a global perspective, IGGCAS has conducted scientific research on Tethys tectonic domain evolution and energy resource effect, craton destruction and massive metal mineralization, the Earth’s interior structure and process, comparative planetology, and other disciplinary frontier matters, and has achieved important progress. At the same time, IGGCAS focuses on the strategic needs of national resource exploration to conduct integrated research on advanced deep resource exploration technology and independent equipment development with key breakthroughs. At present, IGGCAS has actively implemented the "Pioneering Act” plan of the Chinese Academy of Sciences to construct the "Earth Science Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences”, in part with Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, CAS and the Institute of Geochemistry, CAS. IGGCAS strives to be a leader in deep resource exploration equipment and development of frontier technology, a demonstrator and practitioner of new resource theory and innovation technology industrialization, the world’s leading provider of deep resources technology solutions, and a cultivator of high-end geo-science talent.

NORTHWESTERN POLYTECHNICAL UNIVERSITY (SHANXI PROVINCE)

Located in the historic city of Xi’an, cradle of Chinese civilization and terminus of the ancient Silk Road, Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) is the only multidisciplinary and research-oriented in China that is simultaneously developing education and research programs in the fields of aeronautics, astronautics, and marine technology engineering. It is now affiliated to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), NPU has always been one of the nation’s key universities. In 1960 it was approved as a state key university by the State Council. It ranked among China’s top 15 universities in the state’s 7th and 8th Five-Year plans; and NPU is one of the first 22 universities to have established a graduate school. It was one of the first universities to enter into the 211 Project in 1995 and the 985 Project in 2001. NPU is a member of the "Outstanding University Alliance" program and is honored as a National Role Model Unit, a National Pioneer for Optimal Advanced Basic-level Party Organization and a Model University for Graduate Employment etc. NPU adheres to the motto " Loyalty,Integrity,Courage and Perseverance" while carrying forward the spirit of " Strong Preparation,Diligent Effort,Practical Attitude,and Creative Innovation". NPU has put its roots down in the west; dedicated itself to national defense and written several “firsts” into the history of the PRC. XI’AN INTERNATIONAL STUDIES UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1952, Xi’an International Studies University (referred as theUniversity thereafter) is one of the earliest 4 foreign language institutions established in new China.

Multilayered System in Higher Education
The University has 23 departments/schools and offers 52 undergraduate programs, and master degrees for 4 disciplines in Category I, 53 disciplines in Category II, and 6 professional disciplines, as well as doctoral degrees in one Category I discipline and 13 disciplines in Category II, and one post-doctoral research station. The University recruit`s students from 37 countries and undertakes adult and non-academic education, preparation government-funded overseas study, and enterprises-commissioned training programs. The total enrollment is about 20,000, and among them 18,675 are full-time students.
Key Disciplines
The University now owns one featured program in foreign language and literature (Category I) and 3 key disciplines in Shaanxi Province, such as English language and literature, etc. The University offers 5nationallyfeatured programs including Russian and translation studies. English is a pilot program of national comprehensive reform for academic disciplines. The University now has 5 "brand-name" programs (including German and French, etc.) and 9 featured programs (including Japanese andaccounting, etc.) in Shaanxi Province, and 11 innovative experimental facilities for trainingtalents at both national and provincial level. Foreign language and literature programs ranked seventh nationwide in the third round of disciplinary assessment. The University declared 17 leading programs of Shaanxi Province in 2016.

Mission Statement
