The Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) is a federal institution of Higher Education based in the city of Teresina – State of Piauí and with campuses in the cities of Parnaíba, Picos, Floriano and Bom Jesus. The Institution is maintained by the Federal University of Piauí Foundation (FUFPI) (created by Law No. 5,528, dated 11/12/1968) and is financed with funds from the Federal Government.
The UFPI was established on March 1, 1971, after the merger of some isolated faculties that existed in the State – Faculty of Law, Catholic Faculty of Philosophy, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Administration (Parnaíba) and Faculty of Medicine.
Mission
"To foster the elaboration, systematization and socialization of philosophical, scientific, artistic and technological knowledge appropriate to contemporary knowledge and social reality, forming resources that contribute to local, regional and national economic, political, social and cultural development" (PDI-2010 / 2014).
Objectives and functions
The university aims to cultivate knowledge in all fields of pure and applied knowledge. It is the responsibility of the UFPI, according to chapter I of its statute:
a) to stimulate cultural creation and the development of the scientific spirit and reflective thinking;
b) train graduates in different areas of knowledge, suitable for insertion in professional sectors and for participation in the development of Brazilian society, and collaborate in their ongoing training;
(c) to encourage research and scientific research, with a view to developing science and technology and creating and disseminating culture, and thereby to develop understanding and the environment in which it lives;
d) to promote the dissemination of cultural, scientific and technical knowledge that constitute the patrimony of humanity and to communicate knowledge through teaching, publication or other forms of communication;
e) raise the permanent desire for cultural and professional improvement and enable the corresponding concretization, integrating the knowledge that is being acquired in an intellectual structure systematizing the knowledge of each generation;
f) to stimulate knowledge of the problems of the present world, especially national and regional ones, to provide specialized services to the community and to establish a reciprocal relationship with it;
g) promote extension, open to the participation of the population, aiming at the diffusion of the achievements and benefits resulting from the cultural creation and the scientific and technological research generated in the institution.
