YARMOUK UNIVERSITY

Established in June 1976 by a Royal Decree, Yarmouk University has developed steadily into one of the largest and most prestigious state-supported educational institutions in Jordan. We currently have 27850 students, 936 faculty members, and 1740 administrative and technical staff spread over 13 faculties that offer 56 bachelor degree programs, 63 master degree programs, and 19 PhD programs in a variety of specializations. We also have 11 centers for research and career development.

The university has carved a unique niche for itself in northern Jordan through the diversity of its programs which aim to strike a fair balance between the humanities on the one hand and science and engineering specializations on the other. We hope to inspire our young students by offering a variety of specializations combined with excellence in teaching, opportunities for community service and extra-curricular activities, and encouragement of innovation. Our aim is not merely to produce degree-holders but rather productive citizens with integrity, vision, reasoning, tolerance, and a sense of purpose.

In recent years, the phenomenon of globalization coupled with an overall economic decline has resulted in an unprecedented scarcity of employment opportunities almost everywhere – Jordan is no exception. At Yarmouk University we aim to combat this challenge by offering courses and training programs for both students and staff through our centers, and by partnering with business, industry, NGO’s and other local or foreign institutions. Several companies have established incubators at the university to offer students training and work experience that prepares them for the wider job market and creates a climate conducive to entrepreneurship and innovation.

Research is also one of Yarmouk University’s top priorities, especially within the context of Jordan’s social, economic, environmental, and developmental needs. Several research projects are currently underway in partnership with local and international institutions. Also, the recent establishment of technology transfer offices in public universities, including ours, has served to encourage the commercialization of research findings and inventions – a development that many researchers find appealing.

BAR-ILAN UNIVERSITY

Bar-Ilan University, founded in 1955, was one of the first comprehensive research universities to be established in Israel. From 70 students to 17,000, its milestone achievements in the sciences and humanities have made an indelible imprint on the landscape of the nation. The university has 8 faculties, four of which focus on STEM research. They include Medicine, Exact Sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Biophysics and Mathematics), Life Sciences and Engineering. These faculties are active partners in national science and technology initiatives.

Among the most prominent at BIU is the Institute for Nano-technology and Advanced Materials, a dynamic and growing scientific community with its own dedicated building, the Gonda Multidisciplinary Brain Research center headed by the former director of the Neurocognitive Laboratory at Harvard, and the Center for Applied Cryptography & Cyber security ranked 9th in the world.

Seeking “Impact beyond Excellence”, BIU is currently in a vibrant transformational period of creating challenge-driven research centers which embrace practical research designed to change and improve the human experience; adopting innovative instructional methods; intensifying global outreach; and broadening its discourse and dialogue throughout the Jewish world and Israel.

The University is comprised of students from all over Israel; secular and religious; Jews and non-Jews; Sabras and new immigrants. Included within the BIU family, as well, are a multi-faceted academic faculty and administrative staff. Their confluence represents a mosaic of the State of Israel, providing a unique atmosphere for open exchange of ideas and embracement of the "other." Diversity is a key on the BIU campus, and tolerance and civility our operating code.

At Bar-Ilan our students learn to assume social responsibility. They are provided with an opportunity to become knowledgeable Jews, both formally, though our unique program which requires every student to take academic level Jewish studies courses, thereby grounding them in the basics of Judaism, and informally, through the vast multitude of Jewish experiences available on campus.

To paraphrase the inspirational quote of a renowned 19th century figure: At Bar-Ilan University we provide our students with “wings and roots” – the wings to ‘fly’ academically, scientifically – to push back new boundaries of knowledge, learn new things, explore new intellectual universes; and the roots to ‘bind’ them to this earth, to ensure they fulfill their moral and ethical obligations, and become better people and better Jews.

Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv is today a classic university with a distinct research profile, and the leading contemporary academic and educational hub of Ukraine. With the independent Ukrainian nation arising, the University is facing new challenges and responsibilities. The academic experts of the future can be identified by a thorough professional knowledge and the ability to think creatively, with an understanding of the massive responsibility to be taken when working at the leading-edge of academic thought. Only a university with a long tradition of achievement and success both in teaching and in research could cope with such a mission. On 21 April 1994, Kyiv University was granted the status of "National" by Leonid Kravchuk, the President of Ukraine by Decree № 176/94, and on 25 November 1999 a further Decree, № 1496/99, of Leonid Kuchma, President of Ukraine at that time, significantly expanded the autonomous status of the university. Then on 29 July 2009 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine with Regulation № 795 granted the University the status of being a self-governing and autonomous national research university, while providing increased funding for the future development of the university.

The high status of a classical research University is underpinned by the numerous academic achievements of its staff.
